Key Suspect in Kasipul MP Were’s Assassination Arrested at Kenya-Tanzania Border

Isaac Kuria, a key suspect in the assassination of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, has been arrested near the Kenya-Tanzania border. His capture is seen as a crucial development in the ongoing investigation, bringing the total number of arrests related to the case to eleven, including several individuals allegedly connected to the assassination plot and funding.
In a significant development in the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, authorities have arrested a key suspect identified as Isaac Kuria, also known as “Kush.” The suspect was apprehended in Isebania, a border town adjacent to Tanzania, while reportedly trying to flee the country after the daylight shooting that shocked Nairobi’s Valley Road.
Kuria’s capture is seen as a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation, according to a senior officer, who stated, “This man was on the run, and his arrest marks a major breakthrough in our investigation.” Detectives believe Kuria not only tracked the late MP through the bustling business district of Nairobi but also ambushed him in traffic, fatally shooting him.
He allegedly fled the scene immediately after the crime, making a quick escape to Mihang’o, where he disposed of the murder weapon. This firearm was later recovered by officials. Following that, Kuria is said to have traveled through Narok on a motorbike before eventually reaching Isebania by public transport. Reports suggest he had been communicating with a relative in Tanzania about possibly crossing the border.
The arrest came after detectives intercepted communications showing Kuria was trying to leave Kenya. The source familiar with the investigation noted, “We were monitoring his communications and knew he was trying to leave the country.” He and another individual were arrested at a lodging in Isebania, and both suspects have since been transported to Nairobi, where they are set to appear at the JKIA Law Courts.
With this latest arrest, the total number of individuals detained in connection with Were’s murder has risen to eleven. Those already in custody include his bodyguard, Allan Omondi, his driver, Walter Owino, and William Imoli, who is suspected of organizing and financing the assassination. Investigators have also noted the involvement of prominent figures, including businessman Phillip Aroko and Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng, who are alleged to have financially contributed to the assassination plot.
Additionally, law enforcement is analyzing monetary transactions among the suspects to uncover further motives behind this heinous crime. The late MP was buried on May 9 at his home in Kachien village, Homa Bay County.
The arrest of Isaac Kuria marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation into Kasipul MP Charles Were’s assassination. With eleven individuals now in custody and insights suggesting broader financial motivations for the crime, the case continues to unfold. Authorities are committed to analyzing all relevant data to ensure justice is served.
