TotalEnergies Implements Emission Reduction Measures in Angola FPSOs
TotalEnergies is implementing initiatives to reduce emissions and improve reliability at its FPSOs in offshore Angola, focusing on energy efficiency and optimizing gas turbogenerators. These measures are expected to cut CO₂ emissions significantly and save maintenance costs over the next 20 years.
TotalEnergies is taking significant steps to reduce emissions from its Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs) in offshore Block 17 in Angola. The initiative aims primarily at cutting down the reliance on fuel gas and minimizing emissions linked to power generation. This includes tackling the operational efficiency of gas turbogenerators, which supply essential power to platform equipment, such as pumps and compressors, but sometimes function outside their ideal performance parameters.
The management team has implemented energy efficiency improvements, such as switching to LED lighting and enhancing air filters on turbines. They are also focusing on optimizing the reliability of the turbogenerators and proactively addressing potential failures. To achieve this, power sharing between the Girassol and Dalia FPSOs is being optimized through improvements to the high-voltage power cable that connects them. Additionally, the load management on Pazflor FPSO turbogenerators is being adjusted to increase their operational power.
Another critical area of focus includes revising the current load shedding protocols for the power generation systems. In a forward-thinking move, TotalEnergies is also looking into the deployment of AI-assisted dynamic load shedding to further enhance efficiency. By the end of last year, the cumulative impact of these initiatives resulted in a reduction of CO₂ emissions by approximately 29,000 metric tons, with the potential to achieve an overall reduction of up to 51,000 metric tons within a year.
Beyond the environmental benefits, these measures could lead to significant financial savings, estimated around $13 million in maintenance costs over the next two decades. Through these proactive efforts, TotalEnergies is not only addressing environmental concerns but also reinforcing their operational reliability offshore Angola.
