VinFast plans to open assembly plants in India and Indonesia, shifting focus to Asian markets due to slow progress in the U.S. The India plant is expected by June, and the Indonesia facility by October. High logistics costs have led to a reduction in efforts towards the U.S. and EU markets.

VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to open assembly plants in India and Indonesia as part of its strategic pivot towards the Asian market. The India plant is slated to commence operations by the end of June, while the facility in Indonesia is expected to be operational in October. This strategic shift comes as the company reevaluates its focus, having initially aimed at penetrating the American market.

The decision to pivot was largely driven by the company’s unsatisfactory progress in the United States, compounded by uncertainties regarding U.S. tariffs. Pham Nhat Vuong, the company’s chief, indicated that VinFast will also concentrate on markets in Indonesia, India, and the Philippines, shifting away from investments in the United States, Canada, and the European Union due to elevated logistics costs.

VinFast’s collaboration with Tamil Nadu involves a projected investment of up to $2 billion, with an initial commitment of $500 million over five years. This facility is anticipated to achieve an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. Additionally, the assembly factory in Indonesia is on track for completion as announced earlier, further establishing VinFast’s presence in the Asian automotive market.

VinFast’s strategy to open plants in India and Indonesia marks a significant shift in its business focus towards the Asian market, away from previous plans for the United States. The company’s adaptation to changing economic conditions and logistical challenges showcases its commitment to establishing a robust manufacturing presence in Asia, potentially bolstering its competitive position in the growing electric vehicle market.
