The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported that three of its officers were hospitalized after sustaining gunshot wounds during a raid in Abuja. Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesperson, detailed that the incident took place in the Jahi area of the Federal Capital Territory while the team was raiding an incomplete building based on prior intelligence and surveillance.
During this operation, officers recovered a significant cache of illegal substances, including 74 bottles of codeine, 10 liters of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol (225mg), 4.9 kilograms of skunk, and five Android phones. Unfortunately, as the officers were leaving the site, they came under gunfire, resulting in injuries to three personnel: one officer was shot in the rib, while two others were hit in the back and leg.
The officers first received stabilization treatment at the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1 before being transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for advanced medical care. NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa expressed his gratitude to the staff at the police clinic for their prompt assistance. He also commended the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital for his personal involvement in the care of the injured officers.
While in Kano on official duties, Mr. Marwa reached out to the injured officers via telephone to wish them a swift recovery. He assured them that the NDLEA would collaborate with other security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.
In conclusion, the incident involving the NDLEA officers during the raid in Abuja highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel in their efforts to combat drug trafficking. The agency’s prompt response and commitment to the health of the injured officers, alongside collaboration with security agencies to investigate the attack, underscores its dedication to maintaining public safety and upholding the law.
