Armed Robber Sentenced to 30 Years After Violent Crime at Chivayo’s In-laws
Bigboy Nampungo was sentenced to 30 years for armed robbery at Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws, with a total theft amounting to US$74,000. In a recent ruling, Bigboy Nampungo, 27, has been sentenced to a cumulative 30 years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery that occurred at businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws’ property in Marondera. Charged with six counts of armed robbery, he initially received a 60-year sentence, but will serve only 30 years as half of the time runs concurrently with his initial counts.
Nampungo entered a guilty plea after admitting to robbing multiple individuals at Chivayo’s Alpha and Omega Farm on March 18, 2025. The robbery resulted in the theft of US$74,000 in cash and valuables from victims, including Zex Mutasha Rusike and others present during the incident.
During the trial, it was revealed that Nampungo and his accomplices armed with rifles, pistols, machetes, and other weapons executed their robbery plan by overpowering and restraining security guards on duty. The assailants inflicted physical harm on the guards while demanding to know the whereabouts of others guarding the premises.
They then proceeded to breach the main house by cutting through a burglar screen and demanded cash from those inside. The victims, fearing for their safety, surrendered substantial amounts of cash and valuables to avoid further violence. When a guard attempted to intervene, firing shots at the assailants, the robbers retaliated before fleeing the scene with the stolen items.
Nampungo’s co-accused, including Garikai Shangwa and others, are currently in custody with their trial proceedings set for April 10, maintaining their innocence against the charges.
