North Korea has unveiled its first AI-powered suicide drone and airborne early-warning radar system, as reported by state media. On March 27, North Korea announced the unveiling of its inaugural artificial intelligence (AI)-powered suicide drone along with its first airborne early-warning radar system, according to reports by state media. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) showcased images of these technological advancements, noting that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducted an inspection and offered guidance to military officials during the presentation.

Kim emphasized the importance of prioritizing unmanned equipment and AI in the modernization of military forces, stating, “The field of unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence should be top-prioritized and developed in modernizing the armed forces.” The newly introduced airborne radar systems are designed to identify enemy aircraft, ships, and missiles, which would enhance North Korea’s defensive and offensive military capabilities.

Photographs released by KCNA depicted the drone executing a test flight, including images of it colliding with a tank-like object before detonating. This marks the first official presentation by North Korea of airborne early-warning aircraft, which could significantly enhance its air defense systems, historically known to be outdated.

In a report from September 2024 by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), it was highlighted that North Korea has been retrofitting Russian-supplied aircraft to serve as airborne radar platforms. These modifications aim to supplement existing ground-based radar systems, which face limitations due to the challenging mountainous terrain of the region.

North Korea has also solidified its military alliance with Russia, reportedly providing artillery, missiles, and soldiers in exchange for oil supplies and advanced rocket technology. It is estimated that more than 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to assist Russia in the ongoing conflict, particularly in the region of Kursk Oblast, where combat against Ukrainian forces has been reported since August 2024. Further assessments indicate that around 12,000 North Korean personnel have participated in these military operations, leading to significant casualties, as indicated by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
