Canadian Delegation Addresses Liberia’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Crisis
A Canadian delegation visited Liberia to address the mental health and substance abuse crisis declared a national emergency. On March 21, 2025, a Canadian delegation, acknowledging Liberia’s escalating drug addiction crisis, met with Canadian interns involved in community-based research on mental health and substance abuse. This initiative, which is backed by Global Affairs Canada and executed in partnership with Empowerment Squared and McMaster University, aims to address the country’s pressing mental health challenges over a four-year period.
The delegation, led by Leo Nupolu Johnson, CEO of Empowerment Squared, concluded a significant two-day visit to Liberia, reaffirming Canada’s dedication to Liberia’s developmental needs. During their stay, they strengthened partnerships in vital areas such as education, health, and economic development, with local leadership provided by Ama Harris and Attorney Decontee King-Sackie.
Included in the delegation were key officials from Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire. The team engaged with various Liberian institutions, including the Ministries of Youth and Sports, Health, and Foreign Affairs, to identify collaborative strategies addressing national issues related to public health and education.
A noteworthy aspect of the visit was the tour of the newly inaugurated Liberian Learning Center, a $2 million facility designed to promote education and sustainable community development. Key features include a library, co-working spaces, a gymnasium, and the Center’s environmentally friendly technology such as solar power and rainwater collection.
