National Security Raids Home of Former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Addison

On March 19, 2025, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, experienced a traumatic raid by armed national security officials at his home in Accra. The search yielded no evidence of wrongdoing, yet it has raised significant concerns regarding state overreach and the treatment of former officials.
On March 19, 2025, the private residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison was raided by approximately 20 armed individuals, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat. This incident occurred at Dr. Addison’s home in Roman Ridge, Accra, while he was present with his family.
Upon arrival, the National Security team disabled the property’s CCTV system and demanded that Dr. Addison show them any vaults. However, Dr. Addison informed the armed men that there were no vaults or significant amounts of cash at his residence. Despite his denial, the security personnel proceeded to ransack the house.
The search concluded without the discovery of any vaults or large sums of money, leading the raiders to remove the CCTV monitor and control unit from the premises. This traumatic experience has deeply affected Dr. Addison and his family, as reported by an associate.
A former senior official at the central bank remarked on the incident: “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.” This raid marks at least the second occurrence of armed searches of former prominent officials from the Akufo-Addo administration. Previously, on February 10, 2025, the home of Ken Ofori-Atta, the longest-serving finance minister of Ghana, was also raided under similar circumstances.
The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence by armed national security personnel raises serious concerns regarding the treatment of high-profile former officials in Ghana. With no evidence found during the search and the psychological distress inflicted on the Addison family, the incident has drawn significant attention and criticism. It marks a worrying trend in the approach of the current government, set against the backdrop of earlier similar actions against other former officials.
