Bee Group Invests CFA610 Million for Electric Motorcycles in Cameroon

Bee Group is partnering with Tembo Electronical Technology to launch an electric mobility project in Cameroon, with a CFA610 million budget for 40 electric motorcycles by July 2025. The initiative aims to significantly reduce operational costs for mototaxi drivers while promoting environmental sustainability and job creation. The project is endorsed by TotalEnergies and the Cameroonian government, offering tax benefits for electric vehicle adoption.

Bee Group, a company focused on urban mobility and freight delivery, is collaborating with Tembo Electronical Technology to implement an electric mobility initiative in Cameroon. This project, which has a budget of CFA610 million (approximately $1 million), will begin its pilot phase in July 2025, featuring the introduction of 40 electric motorcycles alongside their charging stations.

Starting June 2025, the 40 electric motorcycles will be distributed among Douala, Yaoundé, Bertoua, and Bafoussam, with ten motorcycles allocated to each city. Each motorcycle will include four batteries, with two in service while the others recharge at partnerships with TotalEnergies and Ola Energy. “Each charging station will hold 12 batteries, ensuring a continuous energy supply,” stated Patrick Timani, CEO and co-founder of Bee Group.

Following the pilot phase, Bee Group intends to import an additional 100 motorcycles and aims to establish local production by 2026. Timani emphasized the initiative’s goals, saying, “We want to create local jobs, lower import costs, and transfer technology to Cameroon.” The project receives support from 3S Motors, TotalEnergies, and the Cameroonian government.

According to the 2025 finance law, electric vehicles are now exempt from a previously imposed excise duty of 12.5%. Furthermore, a 50% tax reduction is applicable on the value of new motorcycles, batteries, and charging stations for the next two years.

Transitioning from fuel-powered mototaxis to electric alternatives presents significant cost savings for the drivers, who currently expend approximately CFA6,000 daily on fuel. With an electric motorcycle, daily expenses would drop to around CFA1,600, translating to a monthly saving of CFA114,400 over 26 working days. Additionally, maintenance costs will be reduced, as electric motorcycles do not require oil changes.

This initiative not only promises lower transport fares for passengers but also contributes to environmental benefits by reducing pollution levels. With mototaxis accounting for 61% of all trips in Douala, Bee Group aspires to foster a sustainable transformation in urban transport. The company plans to extend its operations to other African nations post-Cameroon, blending innovation with job creation and ecological stewardship.
