AmaWaterways Delays Colombia Debut of AmaMagdalena to Early April

AmaWaterways has delayed the AmaMagdalena’s debut in Colombia to early April from March 15 due to minor issues. The company plans to operate two ships on the Magdalena River, and passengers are currently exploring Colombia through excursions. Two itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia, are scheduled for future sailings.

AmaWaterways has postponed the debut of the AmaMagdalena in Colombia to early April, specifically citing delays due to minor issues, as stated by Kristin Karst, the company’s co-founder and chief brand ambassador. Initially scheduled for March 15, this delay also follows another postponement from a planned November launch.

As part of its Magdalena River initiative, AmaWaterways intends to operate two ships, marking the return of passenger cruises to this river for the first time in over half a century. The company’s plans for excursions in this region were first announced in 2021. Guests initially booked on the AmaMagdalena are still traveling in Colombia, exploring by excursion boats and visiting significant sites such as Cartagena, Palenque, and Barranquilla.

To support these operations, AmaWaterways has recently recruited eight cruise managers for both the AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia, which is slated for a June launch. The company has established an office in Barranquilla, employing approximately ten individuals, further demonstrating its commitment to the region.

Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways, emphasized the unique challenges of introducing new cruise offerings on this river, calling it a pioneering effort. He remarked, “This is the first time a major river cruise line is offering a journey of this nature on the Magdalena River,” highlighting the adventurous spirit in opening new travel experiences.

AmaWaterways is promoting two distinct itineraries for its Colombian sailings: the Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia. These seven-night cruises are set for various departure dates in 2025, 2026, and 2027. The Magic of Colombia itinerary runs from Barranquilla to Cartagena, while the Wonders of Colombia follows the opposite route from Cartagena to Barranquilla. According to AmaWaterways’ website, a Magic of Colombia sailing is scheduled for April 5.
