Zanu PF MP Tsungai Makumbe Acquitted of Rape Charges

Tsungai Makumbe, a Zanu PF MP, has been acquitted of rape charges against his ex-wife due to insufficient evidence and inconsistencies in her testimony, according to Harare Magistrate Clever Tsikwa’s ruling. Mazowe North Member of Parliament Tsungai Makumbe, affiliated with Zanu PF, has been acquitted of charges pertaining to the alleged rape of his 23-year-old ex-wife under duress of a firearm. The ruling by Harare Magistrate Clever Tsikwa occurred on Wednesday, asserting that the prosecution did not meet its burden of proof. Allegations claimed that the incident, which purportedly led to the complainant’s pregnancy and resulting health issues, transpired in Mt Pleasant in November 2022.

According to the allegations presented by prosecutors, Makumbe had approached the complainant at approximately 10 PM, requesting her to come to his vehicle. Upon her compliance, he reportedly brandished a grey pistol, subsequently demanding sexual relations. It was purported that he forced the complainant to exit the car, twisted her leg, and coerced her into bending before the assault occurred.

Despite the severity of the claims, the complainant delayed reporting the incident until September 2 of this year, although it was alleged that she received US$20 from Makumbe for emergency contraception. Following the alleged assault, she was treated at Parirenyatwa Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a chronic illness. The magistrate noted a lack of corroborative evidence and significant inconsistencies within the complainant’s statements, leading to the dismissal of the charges. “The complainant’s version has many inconsistencies and lies. She attempted to paint the accused wrongly,” commented Magistrate Tsikwa. Makumbe was defended by lawyer John Ndomene during the proceedings.
