The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team prepares for their 100th WRC event at the Safari Rally Kenya from March 20-23. The rally marks a historic milestone and promises excitement with new stages and unpredictable weather conditions.
The Safari Rally Kenya marks a significant event for the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team as they aim to defend their unbeaten record during their 100th official engagement in the FIA World Rally Championship from March 20-23. The team has achieved remarkable success thus far, securing a one-two finish and maximum points in the initial rallies held in Monte Carlo and Sweden, marking the most successful start to a WRC season for a manufacturer in recent history.
Elfyn Evans, currently leading the drivers’ standings, arrives with momentum after his victory in Sweden. Competing alongside him will be Takamoto Katsuta, who has previously achieved podium finishes in Kenya. Kalle Rovanperä, another fierce contender, holds a strong record in this rally, having secured victories in the last two editions, while Sami Pajari will be making his Safari debut in the TGR-WRT2 entry.
The TGR-WRT boasts a commendable legacy on the Safari, having triumphed in all four editions since its return in 2021, contributing to a total of 12 victories for Toyota. Notably, this year marks the 40th anniversary of Juha Kankkunen’s first WRC win in the same location, with Kankkunen taking the lead role as Deputy Team Principal on-site for the first time.
The Safari Rally presents unique challenges due to its rough and rocky terrains, interspersed with soft sandy sections. Rain can transform the dry conditions into muddy paths. Teams must prepare for this variability, employing snorkel systems to ensure engines remain functional in challenging conditions.
This year’s rally is extended to 384.86 competitive kilometers, making it the longest WRC round in several years. The event begins in Nairobi, featuring the Kasarani super special as the initial stage, followed by new stages including Mzabibu and Camp Moran. Crews will also navigate multiple tests around Lake Elmenteita and conclude on Sunday with the Power Stage at Hell’s Gate.
The GR Yaris Rally2 will debut in Africa, featuring customer entries among the top six crews in WRC2. Championship leader Oliver Solberg will compete alongside notable drivers like Jan Solans and Kajetan Kajetanowicz, who makes his GR Yaris Rally2 debut.
In conclusion, the Safari Rally Kenya represents a pivotal moment for the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team as they celebrate their 100th WRC event. With a strong lineup of experienced drivers and an established history on this iconic rally, the team aims for continued success amid the unique challenges this rally presents. The expansion of the route and varied conditions will test all teams, keeping the competition exhilarating and unpredictable.
