A British couple residing in Thailand has been convicted of injuring their neighbors during a property dispute, despite being victims of aggression. The local court in Hua Hin ruled against 77-year-old Desmond Byrne and 69-year-old Mary Byrne, holding them responsible for superficial injuries and emotional distress to their neighbors.

Additionally, the Byrnes were accused of contempt of court for discussing their case with the media while legal proceedings were ongoing, a charge they refuted. The couple received a 20-day suspended jail sentence along with a fine of 17,500 baht (approximately US$520).

Following the conviction, the Byrnes, who had relocated to Thailand for retirement in 2021, are permitted to reclaim their passports and return to the United Kingdom after settling the fine. Mary Byrne shared her sentiments regarding their situation, stating, “Our idyllic retirement in paradise has landed us in a living hell.” They purchased a villa in Hua Hin for approximately £200,000 (around US$258,585).

The Byrnes were convicted despite being victims of violence in a property dispute, facing a suspended jail term and monetary fines. They expressed deep distress about their current circumstances, emphasizing the stark contrast to their expected retirement life in Thailand.
