Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Tragedy in Mozambique and Malawi with Nine Deaths

Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi, with thousands displaced and significant infrastructure damage reported. Relief efforts are hampered by access issues following severe flooding. This event follows last year’s Cyclone Chido, which also caused numerous fatalities in the region.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically claimed at least nine lives across the regions of Mozambique and Malawi. The confirmation came from officials on Thursday, indicating that six deaths occurred in Mozambique, along with injuries to 20 individuals and the displacement of 9,525 residents in the provinces of Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia.
In Malawi, the effects of the cyclone were equally devastating, with three reported fatalities and approximately 20,000 individuals left homeless due to severe flooding in the southern region. Chiphiliro Khamula, a representative from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, stated that those affected are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.
The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique on early Sunday, subsequently moving towards southern Malawi. Flooding persisted from Monday through Wednesday, severely affecting the area. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that relief efforts are being significantly obstructed by washed-out roads and destroyed bridges, hindering access to affected areas.
Cyclone Jude follows another devastating cyclone, Cyclone Chido, which struck both Mozambique and Malawi in December of the previous year, resulting in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, reflecting the ongoing vulnerability of these regions to such natural disasters.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a severe impact on Mozambique and Malawi, leading to nine confirmed fatalities and significant displacement. The aftermath has rendered thousands homeless, creating urgent needs for humanitarian assistance. The major challenges posed by infrastructural damage further complicate relief operations, highlighting the ongoing susceptibility of these nations to cyclonic events.
