Disappearance of Indian Student Sudiksha Konanki: Authorities Investigate Joshua Riibe

Joshua Riibe is named a person of interest in the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old student who went missing in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working closely with the FBI. Surveillance footage and conflicting statements from Mr. Riibe contribute to the complexity of the case as efforts continue to find Ms. Konanki.
Authorities have identified 24-year-old Joshua Riibe as a person of interest concerning the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old Indian student. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office stated that while Mr. Riibe is a person of interest, the investigation remains classified as a missing persons case, rather than a criminal investigation. Spokesperson Chad Quinn noted, “This particular individual may have been the last one to have seen her, so it is of particular interest.”
Sudiksha Konanki, a student at the University of Pittsburgh, was last seen on a beach in Punta Cana on March 6, after traveling with five friends for vacation. Mr. Riibe, who was not a member of her original group, encountered them at the resort. The group was reported to have been at a resort disco until around 3 a.m. before heading to the beach, with surveillance footage showing them arriving around 4:15 a.m.
By approximately 5:50 a.m., most of Ms. Konanki’s friends had left, leaving her with Mr. Riibe. Subsequently, he was seen alone hours later, and Ms. Konanki has been unaccounted for since then. Mr. Riibe, a senior at St Cloud State University, has reportedly provided varying statements to the authorities regarding the events of that night. In one instance, he indicated that he felt sick before last seeing her in knee-deep water, while in another, he mentioned seeing her walking on the shore before losing consciousness.
The search for Ms. Konanki is being actively conducted by Dominican authorities with assistance from the FBI. A spokesperson for La Policia Nacional stated, “We have expanded the investigation: more personnel, more equipment… interviews, and are reviewing security camera footage.” Ms. Konanki was last seen swimming in a brown bikini, and her clothes were located neatly folded on a chaise lounge. Surveillance footage captured her walking with Mr. Riibe, which marked her last confirmed sighting.
Complicating matters, the Hotel Riu Republica, where she was staying, experienced a 25-hour power outage before her disappearance; however, electricity had been restored prior to the time she was last seen. Security cameras at the hotel captured Ms. Konanki leaving the bar with her friends. As of now, a week has passed without clear leads in the investigation, prompting the Dominican authorities to form a specialized task force, collaborating with the FBI and the US Embassy. Loudoun County detectives are also traveling to the Dominican Republic to assist the ongoing investigation under FBI supervision.
The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki raises significant concerns, given the circumstances surrounding her last known whereabouts and the conflicting statements from Joshua Riibe, who has been named a person of interest. The collaboration between local authorities and the FBI highlights the urgency of the investigation, as efforts to locate Ms. Konanki continue without definitive leads. The case underscores the importance of safety in travel and the vigilance needed in unfamiliar environments.
