According to witnesses, Khalid was sleeping outdoors with a tea seller due to the heat when a group of policemen emerged from a nearby beer parlor, and one officer opened fire without provocation.
Eyewitnesses revealed that following the initial shot, a second bullet was fired in the direction of the tea seller, who managed to escape unharmed. A resident expressed deep concern, stating, “Sani was killed by police officers last night under disturbing circumstances. He was sleeping outside when the police shot him without any provocation or offence.” Tragically, upon returning to the scene, bystanders found Khalid dead, with additional evidence such as a bullet and an empty bottle of Gulder implicating the officers.
In response to the incident, the spokesperson for the Niger State police, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the police command had received complaints regarding the shooting. He mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Ebenezer Dammam, had instructed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maitumbi to conduct an investigation to identify the responsible officer. The police command assured that further developments would be communicated to the public soon.
