Suspicion of Cocaine Discovery in Sierra Leone’s Diplomatic Vehicle Sparks Investigation

In Sierra Leone, authorities have launched an investigation following the discovery of seven containers suspected to contain cocaine in a diplomatic vehicle. On Monday, Guinean officials seized the vehicle and detained its occupants, suspecting the presence of illegal substances, as reported by Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba. To address this incident, Sierra Leone’s government urgently summoned its ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, to return to Freetown for clarification.
The ambassador was not aboard the vehicle during the incident and was not arrested, according to Minister Kabba. He emphasized that there is no evidence implicating the ambassador in any trafficking activities, adding that approximately $2,000 was discovered alongside the containers, though he did not disclose the weight of the suspected narcotics.
Both Sierra Leone and Guinea are collaborating on a thorough investigation regarding the matter, with the Minister affirming that all parties involved will be held accountable. “Anyone found in violation of Sierra Leone’s laws and international laws regarding drug trafficking will face serious legal consequences,” he stated.
Sub-Saharan Africa is a significant route for cocaine trafficking originating from South America to Europe, which is a major market for the narcotic. There are also concerns about narcotics being used domestically within Sierra Leone. Last month, Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, declared drug use to be an urgent issue in the country, notably highlighting the prevalence of Kush, a mixture of drugs. Citizens are urging the government to assist in combating the drug problem.
