Satellite Observations of Flood Extent in Botswana as of March 2025
On March 4, 2025, satellite imagery revealed flooding in approximately 7 km² in Botswana’s Gaborone, South East, and Kgatleng Districts. Floodwaters have receded by 23 km² since late February, according to preliminary analysis. UNOSAT seeks ground feedback for further validation.
Recent satellite imagery, including data from Sentinel-2, PlanetScope, and Kanopus-V, has revealed the flood extent in Gaborone, South East, and Kgatleng Districts, Botswana, as observed on March 4, 2025. The analyzed region spans approximately 700 square kilometers, with around 7 square kilometers currently affected by floodwaters. Notably, floodwaters have decreased by approximately 23 square kilometers since the observations taken on February 23 and 25, 2025.
This assessment serves as a preliminary analysis and remains unverified through on-site inspection. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide on-ground feedback to assist the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) in further validating the findings.
In summary, satellite observations indicate a current accumulation of floodwaters in select regions of Botswana, with a significant reduction since late February. Continued monitoring and validation through ground feedback will enhance the accuracy of flood assessments.
