UNICEF Botswana Reports on Flood Crisis and Humanitarian Response
Since 16 February 2025, Botswana has faced severe flooding due to heavy rains, displacing over 5,000 individuals and disrupting access to essential services. UNICEF has allocated $50,000 to provide vital supplies and is appealing for an additional $860,000 to support recovery efforts. The crisis significantly impacts the vulnerable, highlighting urgent needs for aid and infrastructure restoration.
The flood situation in Botswana, which began on 16 February 2025, has led to extensive displacement, affecting over five thousand individuals, including a significant number of children. The heavy rains have severely disrupted access to clean water, healthcare, education, and basic shelter, particularly impacting the most vulnerable populations and heightening the threat of disease outbreaks.
Infrastructure in affected areas has seen considerable damage, with road closures and power outages impeding mobility and the provision of essential services. Health clinics in Molapowabojang and Kanye are currently facing disruptions in their services, exacerbating the challenges posed by the crisis.
In response to these urgent needs, UNICEF has allocated US$50,000, working in partnership with the Botswana Red Cross Society. This funding aims to facilitate the distribution of essential supplies, including hygiene kits, safe drinking water, and oral rehydration salts, while also providing links to health facilities and child protection measures in evacuation centres.
Additionally, UNICEF has made an appeal for US$860,000 to bolster government initiatives aimed at delivering life-saving assistance and supporting long-term recovery efforts in the region.
