The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of moderate to heavy rainfall across eight regions from March 7 to March 11. Key areas include the Highlands and Lake Victoria Basin. Sunny conditions will precede the rains, with high temperatures expected in most regions. Strong winds will also impact Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall from Friday, March 7, through Tuesday, March 11. Specifically, rain is anticipated across eight geographical areas, including the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Central and South Rift Valley regions.

Rainfall is also projected for the Coastal Region, Southeastern Lowlands, Northwest, and the southern part of the Coast. Despite being predominantly sunny and dry at the outset, conditions will shift as rainfall becomes more likely over the weekend, as noted by the Kenya Met.

“Isolated storms are also expected in these areas during this period, especially over the weekend,” the meteorological department added. The Highland East Counties, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, are slated to experience moderate to heavy rainfall this weekend extending into early next week.

Starting with sunny and hot conditions on Friday, these counties are predicted to begin receiving rain from Saturday afternoon. The counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi are forecasted to experience heavy rainfall from Sunday, March 9, until Tuesday, March 12.

Additional counties anticipated to undergo similar weather patterns include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. Conversely, the North Eastern region’s counties, such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are expected to enjoy sunny conditions over the weekend.

Moreover, the meteorological department warns of high temperatures exceeding 30°C across many regions, with exceptions made for areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where temperatures are expected to remain below this threshold. Strong southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s), are also predicted for parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

In summary, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall advisory indicating moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions over the weekend. While most of the country will initially experience sunny and hot weather, significant changes are anticipated, particularly starting Saturday afternoon. Areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley will experience cooler temperatures, while strong winds may affect Northwestern and Northeastern regions.
