MAN Engines Ordered for Svitzer Tug Newbuilds by Cheoy Lee Shipyards

Cheoy Lee Shipyards has contracted MAN Energy Solutions for the supply of high-speed engines for four new TRAnsverse tugs destined for Svitzer. Each tug will be equipped with twin MAN 175D-MM marine engines, producing 2,400 kW each. The delivery is scheduled between 2025 and mid-2026, enhancing Svitzer’s operational fleet with eco-friendly and efficient vessels.
Cheoy Lee Shipyards, a prominent tugboat manufacturer based in Hong Kong, has engaged MAN Energy Solutions for high-speed diesel engines to power new vessels for Svitzer. This contract entails the production of four TRAnsverse 2900 design harbour tugs, which are under construction at the Hin Lee Shipyard in Zhuhai, China. The partnership aims to equip each tug with efficient propulsion systems, enhancing operational capabilities for Svitzer’s fleet.
The order includes eight MAN 175D-MM marine propulsion engines, each featuring 12 cylinders arranged in a V formation, with two engines designated for each of the four tugs. These high-performance, four-stroke engines boast a rating of 2,400 kW each and are set to be manufactured in Frederikshavn, Denmark, with deliveries scheduled for 2025.
Florian Keiler, the Head of High Speed at MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted the advantages of powerful 12-cylinder engines for harbour tug applications. He noted that the MAN 175D engine is specifically designed to address the demands of the maritime industry, emphasizing its compactness, performance, and cost efficiency. Additionally, Keiler pointed out that the 175D engine is eco-friendly, engineered for low fuel consumption.
The engines are compatible with advanced exhaust-gas aftertreatment technologies to meet stringent marine emissions regulations and can operate on biofuels, including fatty acid methyl esters and hydrogenated vegetable oils. Cheoy Lee is expected to complete and deliver the four tugs to Svitzer between the third quarter of 2025 and mid-2026, integrating them into Svitzer’s global operations.
These 29-meter tugs are projected to achieve a bollard pull capacity of up to 80 tonnes, a top speed of 13 knots, and a side-stepping speed of 8 knots, enhancing Svitzer’s operational efficiency in port operations.
