Rising Incomáti River Levels Threaten N1 Connectivity in Mozambique

The Incomáti River’s rising water levels threaten the Maputo province’s connectivity with the rest of Mozambique due to recent heavy rains. Flooding has already affected homes and agricultural lands in the Magude district. Authorities urge the public to heed safety warnings regarding the rising waters of the Incomáti and Limpopo rivers.
The rise in water levels of the Incomáti River in the Incoluane area poses a significant threat to the connectivity between Maputo province and the rest of Mozambique. Heavy rainfall upstream has resulted in the river nearing the height of National Road Number One (N1) in the region that separates Maputo from Gaza. Óscar Sibia, who is the director of the Incomáti Basin Management Division at the Southern Water Regional Administration (ARA-Sul), reported flooding of homes and agricultural fields in the Magude district, and authorities are actively monitoring the situation and assessing the damage.
The ARA-Sul Hydrological Bulletin indicates that various basins, including Maputo, Madubula, Limpopo, Combomune, Chókwè, and Sicacate, continue to experience fluctuating water levels that remain above alert thresholds. Furthermore, the Limpopo basin has seen an increase in hydrometric levels while the Macarretane area remains below the alert level. For the next 24 hours, the hydrological scenario is anticipated to persist, with rising levels in the Maputo, Incomáti, and Limpopo basins due to upstream runoff and localized rainfall.
In conclusion, the significant rise in the Incomáti River presents a serious threat to connectivity in Mozambique, specifically impacting the N1 roadway due to upstream heavy rains. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, addressing the flooding effects in nearby districts while informing the public to remain vigilant regarding safety in flooded areas.
