INAM Forecasts Cyclone Formation: Honde and Garance Near Madagascar

INAM has forecasted the development of two cyclones, Honde and Garance, expected to form near Madagascar. Honde may strengthen into a tropical cyclone, impacting winds and rainfall in Mozambique, while Garance will likely remain distant and pose no threat. INAM urges caution regarding maritime navigation in light of these events.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has announced forecasts regarding the formation of two tropical cyclones, named ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, projected to develop between Thursday and Friday near Madagascar. These cyclonic systems are predicted to generate strong winds across the Mozambique Channel. Currently, Moderate Tropical Storm Honde is situated approximately 250 kilometers off the coast of Inhambane province, heading southward towards Madagascar.
As Honde progresses, it is anticipated to strengthen into a tropical cyclone by Friday (February 28). This transition could result in vigorous winds within the Mozambique Channel, leading to light to moderate, and localized heavy rainfall in certain regions. Meteorologist Lelo Tayob emphasized, “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain. Its direct effects are at sea, but, due to the air masses, the rains will be felt on the mainland.”
Additionally, Tropical Storm Garance is advancing east of Madagascar and is also likely to transform into a tropical cyclone. However, it is not deemed a threat to Mozambique. Tayob noted, “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country. It is moving east and will not cross. If it did cross, it would have a direct impact on the channel and part of our continent. But because it is travelling away, it will not have any significant influence.”
INAM has advised the populace to exercise caution and implement safety measures, particularly in relation to maritime navigation amidst these developing weather phenomena.
In summary, the INAM has predicted the possible formation of two tropical cyclones, Honde and Garance, which may lead to significant weather changes affecting the Mozambique Channel and parts of Mozambique. While Honde could develop into a tropical cyclone and influence local weather patterns, Garance is expected to remain distant and will not affect the mainland. Caution in maritime navigation is advised due to the potential impacts of these cyclones.
