Nigerian Government Demands Investigation into Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda

The Nigerian government has demanded an investigation into the suspicious death of footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. Lawal reportedly fell from a shopping mall in unclear circumstances, prompting NIDCOM to request a full autopsy and investigation. Ongoing inquiries include CCTV footage retrieval and witness interrogations to clarify the event surrounding his tragic death.

The Nigerian government has called for a comprehensive investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, which occurred in Uganda under unclear circumstances. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed her deep concern regarding the situation through a statement issued by the Commission’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

Dabiri-Erewa described the incident as “pathetic and appears suspicious,” insisting on a thorough investigation without any cover-ups. She affirmed that the Nigerian government is committed to ensuring a transparent inquiry into the matter while extending condolences to the bereaved family.

The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has formally requested a full autopsy and detailed investigation concerning Lawal’s death. Reports suggest that Lawal, a professional footballer with Vipers Sports Club and a final-year university student, fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on February 24, 2025.

According to preliminary details, Lawal had gone to the mall to meet with Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national, who left him preparing tea in their room shortly before the incident occurred at around 8:00 am. Following the fall, Lawal was taken to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Several belongings, including two smartphones and other personal items, were found in his backpack.

Authorities are currently recovering CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic event, with the Kajjansi Police Division leading the investigation.
