On February 10, Morocco experienced a 5.1-magnitude earthquake, with additional seismic activity occurring in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands. Related tsunami threats emerged but were later lifted, ensuring public safety. Continued smaller earthquakes were also recorded in California and Alaska, reflecting ongoing geological movements.
On February 10, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Morocco, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Chefchaouen at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles), with USGS receiving 420 reports from individuals who felt the quake.
Earlier that same day, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu, originating from Port-Vila at a depth of 18 kilometers (around 11.9 miles). This event followed a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Cayman Islands reported two days prior, on February 8, with its epicenter in George Town at the same depth of 10 kilometers.
Additionally, the Mexican coastline faced a tsunami warning, which was promptly lifted within two hours, according to the USGS. The National Weather Service Warning Center reassured the public, stating, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed.”
Prior to these events, the Cayman Islands earthquake follows a series of smaller quakes in California, starting with a 3.4-magnitude tremor in Petrolia on February 7, and a 2.9-magnitude earthquake the previous day. Notably, a preceding 4.3-magnitude quake in Alaska was reported on February 5.
The recent seismic activity within a short time frame has highlighted the earth’s volatile nature, particularly surrounding regions such as Morocco, Vanuatu, and the Cayman Islands. While some areas experienced tremors, officials have assured the public regarding tsunami threats, suggesting normalcy can be maintained. The earth’s movements remain a point of study and monitoring for safety and preparedness.
