A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit Morocco on February 10, followed by notable seismic events in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands. A tsunami warning for Mexico was briefly issued and then lifted. In California and Alaska, multiple earthquakes of varying magnitudes were recorded just before these incidents.
On February 10, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Morocco, with its epicenter located in Chefchaouen, at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles). According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there were 420 reported instances of residents feeling the tremor shortly after it occurred.
This latest seismic event followed a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that was recorded in Vanuatu on the same day. The USGS indicated that the quake had its center in Port-Vila, situated at a depth of 18 kilometers (around 11.9 miles).
Hours prior to the Vanuatu earthquake, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake was observed in the Cayman Islands on February 8, with its epicenter located in George Town at a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles). A tsunami warning had been issued for the Mexican coastline shortly after but was rescinded two hours later.
The USGS advised that “with the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed.” They also noted that there are no alerts in effect for the United States or its international partners, advising caution due to potential unusual currents in some areas.
The aforementioned events were preceded by a series of earthquakes in California, including a 3.4-magnitude quake on February 7, centered in Petrolia at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles). This was the latest in a string of seismic activities, including a smaller 2.9-magnitude quake reported just a day earlier at a depth of 4.4 kilometers (approximately 2.7 miles).
Prior to the California events, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake was documented in Alaska on February 5, with its epicenter situated in Sustina at a depth of 5.4 kilometers (about 3.4 miles). The USGS continues to monitor seismic activities in these regions.
In summary, recent seismic activities highlight a series of notable earthquakes across the globe, including significant quakes in Morocco, Vanuatu, the Cayman Islands, California, and Alaska. Each event has been monitored by the USGS, with responses such as tsunami warnings issued in response to the Cayman Islands earthquake. Continued vigilance in monitoring these natural events is essential.
