Western Australia is under a tropical cyclone alert for Zelia, expected to impact the region with heavy rains and strong winds. Canada is experiencing severe cold temperatures, particularly in the west, while northern Europe anticipates a cold snap in the coming weeks. These developments underscore the varied weather challenges being faced in different geographical areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a tropical cyclone alert for the northern coastline of Western Australia. This alert pertains to a tropical low designated as 18U, currently observed near the Kimberley region. Northern Australia is poised to experience strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges beginning Sunday night, accompanied by a flood warning.
Forecasts suggest that 18U will progress southwestward along the warm coastal waters of Western Australia into the following week, with an anticipated strengthening into a tropical cyclone, which will be named Zelia. By the week’s end, Zelia is predicted to make landfall near the Pilbara region, potentially delivering rainfall amounts between 150mm and 250mm (5.9 inches to 9.8 inches) and wind gusts reaching approximately 100 mph.
Meanwhile, Canada experiences another significant cold spell as frigid polar air sweeps in from the north, dropping temperatures by 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F) below seasonal averages. Western Canada is particularly impacted, with cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon bracing for maximum daytime temperatures between -10°C and -15°C, and overnight lows often plunging to -20°C to -30°C.
Saskatoon, lying at the same latitude as the UK’s Cambridge, may experience temperatures as low as -35°C, showcasing a stark contrast to its record low of -13°C. In Europe, a similar cold snap is anticipated, as temperatures gradually decline across northern regions this week. A more severe drop is forecasted for the following week, with potential decreases of 2°C to 5°C below average in various areas, and as much as 10°C below the norm for parts of Scandinavia.
This cooling trend is attributed to an extensive high-pressure area forming over eastern Europe, instigating an easterly wind flow and ushering in a colder polar continental airmass. However, there remain uncertainties regarding both the scope and intensity of this forthcoming cold spell.
Western Australia braces for the impacts of tropical cyclone Zelia, with expected strong winds and heavy rains. Concurrently, Canada faces significant cold temperatures, particularly in Western regions. Meanwhile, Europe prepares for a potential cold snap, indicating a shift to colder weather conditions across multiple regions. These weather patterns highlight the diverse meteorological phenomena occurring globally.
