Tragic Discovery of Migrant Bodies Triggers Investigations in Libya

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office revealed that 28 bodies of presumed irregular migrants were found near Kufra. Seventy-six migrants were freed from forced detention. Additionally, four Coast Guard members were arrested for illegal smuggling plans involving migrants, while Egyptian authorities ramped up security to combat irregular migration efforts.

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office reported on Sunday the discovery of 28 bodies, believed to belong to irregular migrants, in a mass grave located near a detention center north of Kufra in southeastern Libya. Alongside this grim find, authorities freed 76 migrants who had been held in forced detention. Forensic experts have been brought in to ascertain the cause of death, and testimonies from the affected individuals are being recorded. Three suspects, including two foreigners and one Libyan national, are set for interrogation as the investigation unfolds.

Prior to this incident, the Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office had instigated a criminal case against the leader of the Coast Guard in Zuwara City. Four Coast Guard members have since been arrested for allegedly orchestrating the illegal transportation of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea. Investigations have indicated that these individuals attempted to smuggle 37 migrants while engaging in an armed confrontation with the Criminal Investigations Department.

As a result of the examinations carried out on the suspects, authorities have decided to keep them in custody pending further inquiry. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has also mandated the apprehension of additional military and security personnel believed to be involved in the operation. Meanwhile, the migrants will be relocated to shelters until a resolution is provided for their situations.

In a related effort to combat irregular migration, the Libyan Ministry of the Interior announced the detention of numerous Egyptian migrants, who were subsequently repatriated to their home country. Joint Security Room patrols in the Western Mountains conducted operations that resulted in these captures, as well as the retrieval of stolen vehicles. Libyan authorities have often detained Egyptians attempting to make illegal crossings to Europe, with Egypt implementing strict laws penalizing those who facilitate such activities and heightening security measures across its borders.
