Three Electricity Cable Thieves Arrested in Niger State

Three suspects were arrested for electricity cable theft in Niger State. They include Mohammed Isah, Ishiaku Ali, and Ibrahim Aliyu, with incidents occurring in different locations. Authorities recovered stolen materials and emphasized ongoing investigations.
In a recent operation, the Niger State Police Command apprehended three individuals suspected of stealing electricity cables across different areas of the state. The arrests occurred on June 10 at 11:50 p.m. thanks to the coordinated efforts of a local vigilante group and police officers in the Munya Local Government Area.
The suspects have been identified as Mohammed Isah, aged 25, and Ishiaku Ali, aged 30, both hailing from Kwagana village in the Beni area of Sarkin-Pawa. A third suspect, Ibrahim Aliyu, 24, is from the Angwan-Kanawa area of Bosso. Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson, provided these details in a statement released Thursday.
According to Abiodun, the police were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted Isah and Ali in a white Lexus SUV, actively vandalizing over 100 meters of electric cable along the Beni/Sarkin-Pawa Road. Authorities seized a cable cutter at the scene, and the suspects confessed they intended to sell the stolen cables to a buyer in Abuja. They have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further inquiry and potential prosecution.
In a separate incident, Ibrahim Aliyu was captured by security personnel from the Federal University of Technology, Bosso campus, on June 12. His arrest took place on June 11 after he reportedly breached the university’s premises and damaged the generator’s protective features, stealing about 16 meters of armored cable valued around N2 million.
Abiodun noted that Aliyu’s apprehension occurred when he sought to sell the stolen cables to community members in Angwan-Masa Bosso. During questioning, he admitted to acting alone and removing the rubber covering from the cables to hide them. Investigations are ongoing, and he is expected to face charges in court soon.
The Niger State Police’s swift action has resulted in the arrest of three individuals linked to electricity cable theft, a crime that poses a threat to critical infrastructure. The police are continuing their investigations, ensuring that those responsible are prosecuted in a timely manner. Authorities emphasize the importance of community vigilance in combating crime of this nature.
