Liberia Confirms New Cases of Mpox Amid Rising Health Concerns

Liberia’s National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) confirmed four new cases of mpox. The infected individuals were reported from various counties: one from Sinoe, two from Montserrado, and another from Margibi. Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, the Director General of NPHIL, reassured the public during a press conference that the patients are stable and treatment is ongoing. He emphasized the importance of following health protocols to prevent further spread of the disease.

According to Dr. Nyan, between January 1, 2024, and May 11, 2025, Liberia recorded 652 suspected mpox cases, with 572 samples tested. Only 78 were confirmed positive, resulting in just one active case presently. Fortunately, all but one of the previously confirmed cases have recovered, and no deaths are reported so far.

Concerns escalated recently when T. Kelvin Nimely, a well-known comedian and brand ambassador for Orange Liberia, disclosed on social media that he contracted mpox. He shared that he may have contracted the virus during a performance in Lofa County, where an audience member, exhibiting visible rashes, touched him while they were both on stage.

Nimely recounted how he started feeling sick after returning to Monrovia, experiencing fever and other symptoms. He visited several hospitals but seemed to worsen until he learned it might be mpox. After sharing his ordeal on social media, health officials prompted him to get tested at the Duport Health Center.

In response to Nimely’s illness, Maybel Mason, Communications Manager for Orange Liberia, stated the company is closely monitoring the situation and has encouraged all those who traveled with Nimely to get checked. She stressed their concern for his wellbeing and ensured that necessary support is being offered during his treatment.

These new infections in Liberia come at a time when Sierra Leone, a neighboring country, is battling a surge of mpox cases, with over 2,000 confirmed in Freetown. Reports indicate a concerning increase in cases, further intensifying the urgency of public health measures.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yuah A. Nemah from the Ministry of Health stated that Liberia has obtained mpox vaccines from the African CDC. He highlighted ongoing vaccination efforts targeting high-risk individuals, including frontline health workers, with over 2,000 already vaccinated in different counties. Community engagement and awareness campaigns are also being organized as the vaccination program expands into new areas.
