Peter Obi claims some Nigerian youths are paid ₦20,000 to insult him and other political advocates. His comments at a Washington D.C. event have ignited mixed reactions on social media, ranging from harsh criticism to support, while fellow politicians plan their future candidacies amid ongoing political discourse.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria, recently expressed disappointment regarding some youths who allegedly accept ₦20,000 to insult him and other advocates advocating for their welfare. He lamented this situation, suggesting that it is tragic as he aims to pursue improvements for Nigeria’s youth. Despite his intentions, his comments have sparked a wave of mixed reactions among the public.

Obi, who had previously served as governor of Anambra State, made these remarks at a recent event at John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C. This statement comes after his loss in the 2023 presidential election where he secured third place against notable opponents Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and President Bola Tinubu from the APC. Since then, Obi has positioned himself as a major voice of dissent against the current administration.

The comments from Obi have not gone unnoticed on social media, drawing varied responses from citizens. Some users have defended him, whereas others have criticized him harshly. One commenter, Yakub Tijani, accused Obi’s supporters of trolling social media and asserting that he will never be president.

Another commentator, Anthony Ibeh, offered a stark view on Nigerians, stating he believes they deserve “no pity, no kindness,” attributing their struggles to lack of leadership. In contrast, Oloyede questioned Obi’s contributions during his governorship, suggesting he failed to shape the youth positively.

On the flip side, Beejay expressed agreement with Obi, claiming that supporters of Tinubu are intentionally kept impoverished to secure loyalty. Meanwhile, another user, Obong Goodnews, criticized Obi in a roundabout manner, referring to his followers as “gullible and ill-mannered,” which adds to the divisive climate in political discussions online.

In related news, PDP member Segun Sowunmi is preparing to run in the 2027 presidential election, expressing determination to challenge the current policies set forth by Tinubu. His sentiment echoes the widespread debate over who should lead Nigeria, highlighting the growing candidacy interests across party lines.

In conclusion, Peter Obi’s remarks about Nigerian youths accepting payments to insult political figures has sparked significant debate online. The reactions reflect a wider discontent within the youth demographic, the political culture in Nigeria, and the challenges that both current and potential leaders face in addressing real issues.
