An alarm was raised by another adolescent, prompting KWS rangers to track the animal’s movements to the Mbagathi River, where they discovered the girl’s remains.

The lion responsible for the attack has yet to be located, but KWS officials have set traps and deployed search teams in an effort to find the animal. As a precautionary measure against further attacks, KWS has implemented additional security protocols. Nairobi National Park is situated just 10 kilometers from the city’s center and is home to various wildlife, including lions, buffalos, giraffes, leopards, and cheetahs.

The park is fenced on three sides to prevent wildlife from entering urban areas while remaining open to the south for migration purposes. Although interactions between lions and humans are common in Kenya, particularly regarding livestock conflicts, fatalities are rare. In a related incident, last year, CCTV footage captured a lion grabbing a Rottweiler from another residential property near the park. Recently, KWS also reported that a 54-year-old man was killed by an elephant in Nyeri County, approximately 130 kilometers from Nairobi. He sustained severe injuries during the attack while the elephant was foraging in Mere Forest.

This heartbreaking event highlights the dangers posed by wildlife in proximity to human settlements. While measures are being taken to secure the area and protect residents from further incidents, the risk of wildlife encounters remains a significant concern. Both the lion attack and the recent elephant-related death underscore the complex relationship between humans and nature in Kenya.
