Nepal Provides Relief Aid to Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

Nepal has delivered 27 tons of relief materials to Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that resulted in significant loss of life and injuries. The aid was handed over at Yangon International Airport, and it includes food, medical supplies, and other essentials. Key officials from both countries were present during the handover, emphasizing ongoing cooperation and mutual support amid the tragedy.

On April 10, the government of Nepal delivered 27 tons of relief materials to Myanmar, which is reeling from a recent devastating earthquake. This aid aims to support the Myanmar populace in overcoming the loss they have suffered. The relief items, comprising food, essential supplies, medicines, and health provisions, were formally handed over at the Yangon International Airport.

The ceremony was attended by key figures, including Joint Secretary Tapas Adhikari of the Foreign Ministry and Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar, Harish Chandra Ghimire. The Nepalese delegation consisted of 16 members, including officials and representatives from the media. During a brief discussion, Joint Secretary Adhikari extended condolences to the Myanmar government and its citizens, paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the earthquake, which has affected thousands.

Adhikari expressed gratitude for the support Myanmar had provided to Nepal during the 2015 earthquake. He stated, “At such difficult times, Nepal government and private sector joined hands to provide relief materials to the Myanmar people.” He emphasized that this cooperation enhances the bond between the two nations, assuring continued support from Nepal in the future.

Heu Wai Lwin, a government official from Myanmar, expressed appreciation for Nepal’s assistance, stating that the earthquake had resulted in over 3,590 fatalities, with approximately 4,800 injuries reported and 148 individuals missing. In addition, Ambassador Ghimire noted that among the 150,000 Nepalis in Myanmar, 18 had perished due to the earthquake, with 15 still unaccounted for.

The catastrophic event, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake, struck Myanmar on March 28. An umbrella organization of Nepalis is providing shelter for around 250 local survivors, while a medical team from the Nepali Army has been deployed to offer emergency medical services, having assisted over 1,300 individuals who were affected by this disaster.
