A soldier, Private Sadiq Sani, has been arrested by Niger State Police for allegedly robbing and assaulting businessman Abdulrahman Salihu on Eid-el-Fitr. Sani reportedly attempted to deceive Salihu with a fraudulent money transfer, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in severe injuries to Salihu. Following the incident, a comprehensive investigation is underway involving military and police forces.

The Niger State Police have apprehended Private Sadiq Sani, a soldier, on charges of armed robbery and assault against businessman Abdulrahman Salihu. The incident occurred on Eid-el-Fitr when Sani allegedly visited Salihu’s shop seeking to purchase shirts. He requested account details to initiate a money transfer, but it is claimed he sent a fraudulent alert instead.

Suspicious of the transaction, Salihu insisted on receiving the payment before surrendering the shirts. In a violent turn, Sani drew a knife, severely injuring Salihu and amputating his arm before fleeing to his home in Limawa, Minna. Despite neighbors’ attempts to detain him, he escaped.

The police—supported by military personnel—subsequently located Sani. During his arrest, he reportedly confronted police officers before being subdued. Following the incident, military police initiated a comprehensive investigation led by Captain U.S. Ibrahim from the 313 Brigade in Minna. Ibrahim stated plans to present the case to the defense headquarters in Abuja for a court-martial, after which he would be handed back to civil authorities for judicial prosecution.

Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the arrest, revealing that both Sani and a companion had been taken into custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further examination. Abiodun recounted the events leading to Salihu’s injury, noting that a dispute arose over payment, resulting in the soldier attacking Salihu and inflicting severe cuts before fleeing. Both suspects remain in custody for prosecution.

The case of Private Sadiq Sani underscores the gravity of violent crime and misconduct within military ranks. As legal proceedings unfold, the dual approach involving both military and civil authorities aims to ensure justice for the victim and accountability for the alleged perpetrator. The collaboration between police and military personnel highlights a concerted effort to address such acts decisively.
