Peter Obi Declares Absence of True Democracy in Nigeria

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate, claims Nigeria lacks true democracy, stating that fundamental democratic principles are absent. He criticizes the electoral process, the government’s neglect of public needs, and misplaced spending priorities. Obi emphasizes that real democracy must serve the people effectively, highlighting current failings.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate from the Labour Party in the 2023 election, asserts that Nigeria lacks true democratic governance. In a recent segment on Arise TV’s Prime Time, Obi emphasized that the country fails to adhere to fundamental democratic standards, declaring, “There is no democracy in Nigeria today.” He believes it is essential to confront this reality rather than deceive ourselves.
Defining democracy, Obi stated, “Democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” and he argues that Nigeria’s government does not reflect this ideal. He expressed concern over the disregard for citizens’ votes, citing that the voting process is flawed in various elections, not just the presidential one. He referenced incidents like the elections in Edo, questioning their legitimacy.
Additionally, Obi criticized the government for not prioritizing the needs of the people. His visit to a camp for forcibly displaced individuals revealed grave deficiencies in healthcare and education, where individuals sought basic medical attention and schools for their children. He described the disheartening situation, saying, “They begged me for just one nurse… They don’t even have a primary school.”
Obi lamented government expenditures that prioritize luxury over essential services, pointing out that Nigeria allocated N21 billion for renovations of the vice president’s official residence while neglecting the construction of schools necessary for the youth’s future. He has also recently chastised President Tinubu for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers and suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, underscoring his view on leadership failures.
Peter Obi presents a critical perspective on Nigeria’s democratic status, arguing that the government fails to embody the principles of democracy as defined by its service to the people. He highlights systemic issues such as voting disenfranchisement and neglect of essential services, illustrating a disconnect between governmental priorities and the needs of citizens. Obi’s insights pose significant questions regarding effective governance in Nigeria.
