Niger Junta Announces Release of Overthrown Government Ministers

Niger’s junta has released around 50 individuals, including former ministers, in line with national conference recommendations. However, former President Mohamed Bazoum remains in detention despite calls for his release.
On April 2, 2025, Niger’s military junta announced the release of approximately 50 individuals, a group that includes ministers from the ousted government of July 2023. This decision follows recommendations made during a “national conference” held in February. Among those released are former ministers, a diplomat, a journalist, and several soldiers who were accused of attempting a coup in 2010. It is important to note, however, that former President Mohamed Bazoum remains detained despite international appeals for his release.
The release of former government officials and others by Niger’s junta indicates a move towards reconciliation, prompted by a national dialogue. Nevertheless, the continued detention of Mohamed Bazoum raises concerns about the junta’s commitment to democratic processes and international expectations regarding human rights.
