Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will not use an “eye for an eye” approach in response to impending US tariffs. As President Trump prepares to announce reciprocal tariffs, Sheinbaum emphasizes the importance of dialogue and a comprehensive response. She asserts that her administration will wait for specific details before formulating a response, while maintaining that Mexico’s actions will not be subordinate to the United States.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized on Tuesday that Mexico would not adopt an “eye for an eye” strategy amid impending higher import taxes from the United States. Her statements came as President Donald Trump is set to announce reciprocal tariffs, particularly a 25 percent tax on imported automobiles and auto parts. This situation arises as Mexico remains committed to prioritizing communication and aims to provide a comprehensive response to these tariffs.

Sheinbaum expressed her belief that retaliatory measures could lead to further complications, stating, “We do not believe in an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, because that always leads to a bad situation.” She acknowledged that while Mexico would respond to American measures, maintaining dialogue is essential. The upcoming announcement from Trump, categorized as America’s “Liberation Day,” is seen as a means to remedy perceived trade imbalances with various countries.

Given Mexico’s close trade ties with the US, it stands as one of the most vulnerable economies to these tariffs, as approximately 80 percent of its exports go to the United States, including about three million vehicles annually. Despite the impending tariffs, Sheinbaum indicated her administration would wait for the specifics before formulating a response, emphasizing, “We don’t know exactly what will be announced on April 2; no nation in the world knows.”

On the topic of migration, Sheinbaum affirmed her government’s readiness to coordinate efforts with the US but stressed that Mexico will not be subordinate to American authority as her administration answers solely to the Mexican populace. During a recent meeting, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem presented Sheinbaum with a list of requests regarding migration, which included increased authority over Mexico’s border with Guatemala, a common transit point for migrants traveling from South America to the United States.

In summary, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico reiterates her administration’s commitment to dialogue and communication concerning impending US tariffs. Rejecting retaliatory measures, she emphasizes the need for a cooperative but independent stance. Furthermore, she underlines the importance of responding thoughtfully to the announced tariffs, aligning with Mexico’s strong economic ties to the US, while also addressing migration issues without subordination.
