The Addis Ababa City Administration has deployed 100 electric buses to promote sustainable public transport in Ethiopia’s capital. Assembled locally with technology from China, these buses will enhance commuting efficiency and environmental sustainability, aiming to alleviate transportation shortages and replace traditional fuel vehicles in the coming years.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched an initiative featuring 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. This project aims to advance electric mobility in the region, promoting sustainable public transport while reducing reliance on fuel-powered vehicles.

The electric buses were assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, utilizing components imported from China. Each bus is outfitted with modern technologies, including Intelligent Transportation and Fare Collection Systems, as reported by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.

These buses are now operational along the new Bus Rapid Transit route, providing convenient commuting solutions for residents. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, emphasized the environmental benefits, noting the zero-emission nature of these buses and their enhanced passenger capacity.

The implementation of dedicated bus lanes will facilitate quicker travel times, addressing the current public transportation deficits in the city. This initiative is part of a broader goal, with over 100,000 electric vehicles already in use across Ethiopia and aspirations to reach 500,000 in the next decade.

In support of this shift towards electric mobility, the Ethiopian government has enacted a ban on importing gasoline and diesel vehicles since last year, a response to rising global fuel prices, thereby encouraging the transition to more sustainable transportation options.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a significant advancement in Ethiopia’s transportation sector. This initiative not only promotes electric mobility but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing emissions. With government support and ambitious goals for the future, Addis Ababa is positioning itself as a leader in modern public transport solutions.
