100 Electric Buses Launched in Ethiopia’s Capital to Enhance Public Transport

The Addis Ababa City Administration has implemented 100 electric buses to promote sustainable transport in Ethiopia, enhancing the public transit system and aiming to reduce fossil fuel dependency. These buses feature advanced technologies and operate on dedicated lanes for improved efficiency.
The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital as part of its initiative to promote electric mobility. These buses, assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components from China, feature advanced Intelligent Transportation and Fare Collection Systems. The introduction of these buses comes as they begin serving the newly established Bus Rapid Transit route, significantly improving transportation services for residents.
These electric buses enhance the public transit network by offering environmentally friendly rides, as they operate with zero emissions. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, noted that the buses provide a comfortable commute with sufficient passenger capacity. Additionally, the dedicated bus lanes will allow for quicker travel times, addressing the current transportation shortage in the city.
Currently, Ethiopia has over 100,000 electric vehicles, with plans from the government to expand this number to 500,000 in the next decade, replacing 95 percent of fuel-powered vehicles. To facilitate this transition, a ban on the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles was enacted last year, coinciding with rising global fuel prices.
The introduction of electric buses in Addis Ababa signifies a crucial step towards enhancing public transport and promoting environmental sustainability in Ethiopia. With the government’s ambitious plans to increase electric vehicle numbers, this initiative could substantially reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve transportation efficiency in the capital.
