War Child Warns of Rising Child Recruitment Amid Escalating Violence in South Sudan

In South Sudan, escalating violence threatens the safety of 5.4 million children, increasing risks of recruitment into armed groups. War Child expresses grave concern for these children, many displaced and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. The organization is committed to protecting their rights while urging all parties to seek peace.
The deteriorating situation in South Sudan has raised alarming concerns regarding the safety of 5.4 million children and youth. As violence escalates in regions such as Juba, Western Equatoria, and Upper Nile states, War Child warns of an increased risk of child recruitment by armed groups. The conflict has displaced approximately 50,000 individuals since February, with 10,000 seeking refuge in Ethiopia.
War Child indicates that years of conflict, coupled with environmental disasters, have left 4.5 million children vulnerable to humanitarian crises, which include threats of gender-based violence, malnutrition, and educational disruptions. The organization emphasizes that escalating violence may result in children being forcibly involved in armed conflicts as tensions rise in the affected areas.
Zerihun Yohannes, War Child’s Country Director for South Sudan, expressed deep concern about children’s rights being violated amid escalating conflicts. He stated, “Children who should be learning in the classroom or playing with their friends are instead being stripped of their rights and being forced again to bear the burdens of war.” He also underscored the severe psychological ramifications faced by children in conflict zones, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
War Child and its local partners continue to closely monitor the situation. Their ongoing initiatives, including mental health support, education, child protection, and peacebuilding, remain unaffected by current insecurities. In 2024, the organization provided case management services to 689 children, which includes reuniting them with caregivers and offering psychosocial support. Should violence further escalate, War Child is prepared to enhance its support to vulnerable children and caregivers.
War Child urges all parties involved in the conflict to pursue a peaceful resolution that safeguards children, many of whom have known nothing but conflict throughout their lives. The protection of children’s rights and futures must take precedence, preventing their involvement in violence.
The ongoing conflict in South Sudan poses a significant threat to children, with War Child highlighting an urgent need for protections against recruitment into armed groups. As the humanitarian situation worsens, with millions lacking basic resources and education, concerted efforts are necessary from all parties to ensure children’s safety. War Child remains steadfast in its mission to protect children and deliver crucial support. To safeguard their futures, a peaceful resolution to the conflict is imperative.
