Macron Calls for Cessation of Israeli Strikes in Gaza and Lebanon

President Macron urged Israeli PM Netanyahu to end strikes on Gaza and respect the ceasefire, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid. The call comes as Israel resumes military actions after a fragile truce with Hamas collapsed, resulting in civilian casualties in Gaza and renewed tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cease military strikes on Gaza and restore the ceasefire. This request was made during a phone conversation on Sunday, during which he emphasized the importance of humanitarian aid being provided promptly. Macron stated that Hamas must also accept the ceasefire deal, highlighting urgency in resolving the conflict.
On March 18, Israel resumed intensive bombardments on Gaza, leading to a new ground offensive after the breakdown of a fragile ceasefire sparked by an assault from Hamas on October 7, 2023. Tragically, a recent Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunis resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals, including five children, coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
In addition to his concerns for Gaza, Macron called for adherence to the ceasefire in Lebanon. Following a recent Israeli airstrike in southern Beirut, Macron emphasized that Israel must respect the fragile truce that had been in place. This attack came after rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel, raising tensions in the region.
Hezbollah, which maintains ties with Iran like Hamas, has denied involvement in the rocket fire. However, Netanyahu has stated that Israel will respond to perceived threats anywhere in Lebanon, suggesting that military operations could intensify. Macron had condemned the Beirut strikes as an “unacceptable” violation, pointing to the increase in civilian casualties as a significant concern.
President Macron’s urgent communication with Prime Minister Netanyahu reflects the escalating conflict in Gaza and Lebanon. His calls for the cessation of strikes and immediate humanitarian aid highlight the critical situation faced by civilians. As tensions rise, the need for adherence to ceasefires and respect for humanitarian agreements remains paramount to prevent further loss of life and promote stability in the region.
