In a tragic incident in Bulawayo, Sergeant Abel Masava was killed after confronting five suspicious men shortly after midnight on Friday. Masava, assigned to the Tshabalala Police Station, was responding to a domestic violence report when he saw the men approaching in dark clothing. He stopped them to inquire about their identities.

During the encounter, one of the men drew a firearm and shot Sergeant Masava in the head. Despite being immediately transported to the United Bulawayo Hospitals, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. At the time of the shooting, Masava was in uniform.

Prior to the shooting, Masava had left the police station with a colleague to address a domestic violence case involving an assaulted woman. While the other officer, the victim, and her friend were at the location negotiating entry, Sergeant Masava remained near their police vehicle when he was attacked.

This incident marks the second fatality of a police officer on duty in Bulawayo within a month. Earlier, on March 6, Detective Cassandra Hove was tragically shot in the chest by a fellow officer during an incident involving an armed robbery suspect, leading to ongoing investigations into her murder.

The shooting of Sergeant Abel Masava highlights the dangers law enforcement officials face, especially while addressing domestic violence incidents. This tragedy follows another recent death of a police officer, underscoring a troubling pattern of violence against law enforcement personnel in Bulawayo. Authorities must prioritize officer safety and ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect those who serve the public.
