North Korea has sent 3,000 additional troops and military hardware to Russia to support its efforts in Ukraine, bringing the total to 11,000. This follows a meeting between Kim Jong Un and Russian officials where ongoing support for Russia’s actions was emphasized. The alliance may lead to North Korea acquiring Russian technology in exchange for military assistance.

In a significant reinforcement of military collaboration, North Korea has dispatched an additional 3,000 troops alongside more military equipment to assist Russia’s efforts in Ukraine. Reports from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reveal that these reinforcements were sent in January and February, contributing to the previous total of 11,000 North Korean troops already stationed in Russia’s Kursk region. Among the equipment included are short-range ballistic missiles, self-propelled howitzers, and rocket launchers, with estimates indicating that 400 previously sent troops have been killed and 3,600 injured.

This development comes in the aftermath of a meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Pyongyang. During their discussions, Kim reaffirmed his country’s support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, while President Vladimir Putin extended his best wishes through Shoigu. Furthermore, there are speculations that North Korea aims to acquire advanced Russian technology, particularly in drone capabilities and aerospace, in exchange for its military assistance.

Recently, North Korean state media highlighted Kim’s visit to a drone facility, showcasing tests of newly designed reconnaissance and attack drones, which may indicate a more extensive collaboration on military technology between the two nations.

The reported deployment of an additional 3,000 North Korean troops to Russia marks a noteworthy escalation in military cooperation between the two nations. This contingent, along with military supplies, strengthens North Korea’s commitment to supporting Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine, while also seeking technological exchanges in areas such as drone technology. This evolving alliance is significant amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
