On March 27, 2025, three suspects from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, aged between 32 and 35 years, were apprehended for illegal mining activities at Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp. The arrests were made by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team, with support from the Explosive Unit, as part of Operation Vala Umgodi aimed at curtailing illegal mining operations.
Colonel Adele Myburgh, the spokesperson for the North West police, stated that a tip-off led to the operation. Upon arrival, multiple individuals were observed engaged in illegal mining. The suspects attempted to flee upon sighting the police, but three individuals—two from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique—were successfully arrested. Authorities found a significant cache of explosives on site, including 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord.
In addition, police confiscated 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills from the premises. The three suspects are scheduled to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on the same day, facing multiple charges including unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and violations of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002).
Major General Patrick Asaneng, the acting North West Police Commissioner, commended the task team for their efforts in capturing the suspects. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report criminal activities, including through the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the MySAPS application. For incidents related to extortion, individuals can contact the Extortion hotline at 080 091 1011.
The arrests of three suspects for illegal mining signify a decisive move by law enforcement against illegal operations within the region. The successful operation, backed by public cooperation, underscores the ongoing efforts of the police to combat such illicit activities. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicions to the appropriate authorities to enhance public safety and security.
