On March 27, 2025, law enforcement apprehended three individuals aged 32 to 35 from Zimbabwe and Mozambique for illegal mining at the Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp as part of Operation Vala Umgodi. The arrests were facilitated by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team, supported by the Explosive Unit in their ongoing efforts to tackle illegal mining activities.
According to North West police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, the operation was initiated based on a tip-off received by the police. Upon arrival, officers observed numerous individuals engaged in illegal mining. Although many fled upon the sight of law enforcement, three suspects were successfully detained, comprising two Zimbabweans and one Mozambican national. Police reportedly discovered various explosives at the site, including 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord.
In addition to the explosives, the authorities confiscated 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills from the premises. The detained individuals are scheduled to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on the same day, facing charges that include unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and violations of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002).
In a statement, acting North West Police Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng commended the officers involved for their diligent work in apprehending the suspects. He urged the public to promptly report any criminal activities, encouraging the utilization of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the anonymous MySAPS application. Furthermore, he advised that incidents related to extortion could be reported via the dedicated Extortion hotline at 080 091 1011.
The operation led to the arrest of three suspects engaged in illegal mining and the seizure of significant mining equipment and explosives. The authorities continue to combat illegal mining, underlining the importance of public cooperation in reporting such crimes. Upcoming court proceedings will address the charges faced by the suspects, reinforcing the commitment to law enforcement in the region.
