Armed Robbery Suspect Re-Arrested After Court Escape in Harare

Luke Zinyengere, an armed robbery suspect, was re-arrested in Harare after escaping from custody during a court appearance. His escape was allegedly facilitated by a prison officer, Donald Madzinga, who provided him with a firearm. Zinyengere is now charged with multiple offenses including illegal possession of a firearm and carjacking. Madzinga has also been charged for his role in the escape.
On March 21, 2025, Luke Zinyengere, a 29-year-old armed robbery suspect, dramatically escaped custody while in court, allegedly aided by a prison officer. Reports indicate that a prison officer provided Zinyengere with a firearm, which he used to shoot at custody officers during his escape. Law enforcement re-arrested Zinyengere on Monday in Harare following this incident.
In addition to the robbery charges he already faced, Zinyengere is now charged with illegal possession of a firearm, unlawful escape from custody, and carjacking for hijacking a Mazda Demio outside the Harare Magistrates Court. The incident has drawn attention to the actions of prison officer Donald Madzinga, who has been accused of helping facilitate the escape of Zinyengere and another inmate.
The court proceedings revealed that Madzinga allegedly received a revolver from a relative of Zinyengere to assist in the escape. Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti stated, “Contrary to his duties, Madzinga conspired with the said inmates… and charged them US$700.” The revolver was delivered to Zinyengere and another inmate, Richard Marondera, who also participated in the escape.
Madzinga is said to have coordinated communication between the accomplices to organize their escape plan. It was noted that both inmates had concealed the firearm in their pants during their court appearance and executed the escape plan as they were being escorted back to prison. After firing at prison officers, Zinyengere hijacked a vehicle and fled the scene.
Madzinga is scheduled to return to court for a bail hearing before Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa.
The recent events surrounding Luke Zinyengere’s escape from custody have raised significant concerns regarding prison security and staff complicity in criminal activities. The involvement of prison officer Donald Madzinga, who allegedly facilitated the escape, underscores the necessity for thorough investigations into prison operations. Both Zinyengere and his accomplice, now re-arrested, face serious legal consequences for their actions, which have sparked public interest and attention.
