A Mozambique police officer from the UIR was sentenced to 30 years for kidnapping a lottery winner. Along with two accomplices, he demanded the victim’s winnings for freedom. The court imposed additional penalties, including compensation to the victim and forfeiture of property. An appeal is expected from the defense attorneys.

In March, a police officer from Mozambique’s Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) was convicted of kidnapping, receiving a 30-year prison sentence along with two accomplices. Uniquely, the victim, Alan Boene, was not a businessman but rather a lottery winner, having secured 4.58 million meticais (approximately 72,000 US dollars) in November 2023. The group sought Boene’s winnings, resulting in their swift capture by law enforcement.

The Maputo court penalized each perpetrator with 30 years in prison and ordered them to pay the victim 1.7 million meticais in compensation. Furthermore, the court seized the vehicle utilized in the crime and Tembe’s property for state possession. The defense attorneys have indicated plans to appeal the court’s ruling.

The conviction of the police officer underscores a significant case within Mozambique, highlighting the unusual motives behind the kidnapping of a lottery winner. The sentencing reflects the court’s serious approach towards such criminal activities, ensuring justice for the victim. As the defense prepares to appeal, the case may continue to garner attention.
