On March 10, 2022, CRRC Ziyang Co. officially shipped three internal combustion locomotives to Mozambique, marking a significant milestone as it is the first time a Chinese company has provided such units to the Mozambican railway network. These locomotives are designed to adapt to specific operational conditions in Africa, demonstrating CRRC Ziyang’s commitment to the African market.

The recently shipped SDD1 diesel locomotives represent CRRC Ziyang’s strategic re-entry into Africa. These units are the first Chinese-produced diesel locomotives to be introduced to Mozambique’s railway system, paving the path for increased exports of Sichuan’s locomotives in 2022.

Each SDD1 diesel locomotive has been customized for African environmental conditions. CRRC’s technical team integrated numerous innovations, including a lightweight design, an efficient cooling system, and a modular air intake unit. Moreover, the locomotives are equipped with an intelligent control system for real-time monitoring, significantly boosting reliability and safety.

The batch of SDD1 diesel locomotives will serve essential passenger and freight shunting operations in Mozambique, providing vital support for the region’s transportation network.

With a history of 24 years in the African market, CRRC Ziyang has supplied over 230 various locomotives and DMUs to nearly 20 African nations, including Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CRRC Ziyang stands as a leader in diesel locomotive exports, having delivered over 1,200 units across 34 countries. This achievement positions the company at the forefront of China’s diesel locomotive exports, accounting for more than 50% of the nation’s total exports in this sector.
