In January 2023, an investigation was triggered when a customer noticed that a U.S. Treasury check meant for him had been stolen and deposited under Muchimba’s name. Investigators uncovered a scheme dating back to 2021, where Muchimba, sometimes working with a co-worker, stole checks, forged them, and then deposited them into seven bank accounts he controlled.

Of the 98 stolen checks, 90 were U.S. Treasury checks, many representing significant amounts. Records indicate that Muchimba deposited one check worth $415,173.53. Surveillance footage showed him withdrawing funds while wearing his USPS uniform, illustrating the extent of his scheme.
