Formula One’s CEO Stefano Domenicali announced ongoing discussions with Thailand to host a Grand Prix. The move aims to strengthen F1’s Asian presence amidst a record 24-race calendar. Domenicali emphasized a focus on quality fan experiences and confirmed the introduction of Cadillac as the 11th team in F1 by 2026.

Formula One President and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali has disclosed that negotiations with Thailand to potentially host a Grand Prix are progressing. This initiative is part of F1’s strategic aim to enhance its presence in Asia while maintaining a principle of prioritizing quality over quantity in its extensive racing calendar.

During an exclusive discussion with Xinhua, held over the weekend of the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, Domenicali indicated that Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has shown a significant interest in hosting the event. He noted the government’s enthusiasm in pursuing this project and mentioned, “We should finalize something in the next months,” while also emphasizing a cautious optimism in the discussions.

As F1 navigates a record 24-race schedule starting from the 2024 season—a substantial increase from 22 races in 2021—Domenicali remarked that any new locations such as Thailand would necessitate the reevaluation of existing events on the calendar. “We do not want to go over 24 races,” he stated, highlighting the need for a balanced approach.

The F1 CEO accentuated the necessity to enhance fan engagement rather than merely expanding the number of races. His focus is on partnering with promoters to elevate the overall quality of the events, aligning with his recently secured leadership extension through 2029. He remarked, “We need to get into new audiences, and it’s in our DNA to keep the eye on sustainability.”

Looking ahead, the grid for F1 will grow by one team in 2026 with the entry of Cadillac, supported by General Motors, which Domenicali described as a significant but necessary challenge for innovation within the sport. “Cadillac, one of the biggest manufacturers in the automotive industry, brings technology and expertise. It’s beneficial to our sport,” he explained while affirming a focus on quality over quantity in future expansions.
